The Golf Coalition is dedicated to expanding access to golf by uniting programs, building career pathways, and honoring the game's legacy in urban communities. Our mission is to create a world where golf is truly for everyone, allowing individuals from all backgrounds to play, work, and thrive through the game.
Our Mission
The project “Black Golf in Detroit” highlights the untold history of Black golfers in urban America, showcasing their impact on municipal courses and their contribution to community culture. The documentary captures unique narratives that emphasize heritage, equity, and community, aiming to preserve the legacy of Black golfers and their influence on the sport. Our core values include access, opportunity, community, heritage, and equity.
Our Story

Black Golf in Detroit is an original documentary project dedicated to preserving and elevating the untold history of Black golfers in Detroit and other major urban centers across the United States. This documentary chronicles how generations of Black golfers transformed municipal golf courses into de facto “country clubs” during an era when racist policies and exclusionary practices barred them from joining private golf institutions.
Through exclusive interviews, archival research, and first-person storytelling, Black Golf in Detroit documents the lived experiences of everyday Black golfers—workers, civic leaders, athletes, and blue-collar professionals—whose passion for the game helped build a vibrant community culture around public golf. The project also captures the groundbreaking achievements of trailblazing individuals who broke racial barriers, including the first Black Class A member of the Detroit Golf Club (DGC), and others who played pivotal roles in integrating private clubs locally and nationally.
Expanding beyond Detroit, the documentary situates these stories within a broader national narrative, illustrating how Black golfers in cities across America carved out their own spaces, nurtured inter generational talent, and shaped the modern landscape of golf. Black Golf in Detroit asserts a unique creative lens that blends cultural history, sports heritage, and community storytelling to honor the legacy, resilience, and continuing influence of Black golfers.
This documentary concept, narrative structure, and all related materials—including historical framework, story-line, brand identity, and collected interviews—are original intellectual property developed expressly for the Black Golf in Detroit brand.
